Are AirPods, AirPods Pro waterproof? (Gen 1, 2, 3)
Wondering if your AirPods or AirPods Pro are completely waterproof? The short answer is no, but certain models like the AirPods Pro 2 are dust, sweat, and water resistant. We'll go over the specific models and their respective dust, sweat, and water resistance ratings below.
Key Facts
None of the current AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max are completely waterproof, but some are water resistant
The AirPods (3rd generation) and AirPods Pro (1st generation) are sweat and water resistant, but not dust resistant
The AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C MagSafe Charging Case is the only model to be rated as dust, sweat, and water resistant.
Are AirPods or AirPods Pro Waterproof?
None of the AirPods (1st, 2nd, 3rd gen) or AirPods Pro (1st or 2nd gen) are 100% waterproof, but there are a few models that are water and sweat resistant:
AirPods (3rd generation) and its charging case are water and sweat resistant with a rating of "IPX4" under IEC standard 60529.
AirPods Pro (1st generation) are water and sweat resistant with a rating of "IPX4" under IEC standard 60529. The AirPods Pro 1 charging case is not water or sweat resistant and does not carry a rating.
AirPods Pro (2nd generation) and its charging case is dust, sweat, and water resistant with a rating of "IP54" under IEC standard 60529
Can you use AirPods or AirPods Pro in the shower or for swimming?
It is not recommended to use any AirPods or AirPods Pro in the shower or swimming, since no current model is 100% waterproof. Even the water resistant models, such as the AirPods Pro 2, should be used with caution around water and never be fully submerged. Apple recommends that these water resistant AirPods are only used for "non-water sport or exercise".
This advice extends to wearing them in the rain as well. Most likely the water resistant AirPods 3, and AirPods Pro 1 and 2 have a better chance to be fine in some light rain.
Can AirPods survive in the washing machine?
Although some users online report that their AirPods survived a cycle in the washing machine, this is not recommended as none of the current AirPods are completely waterproof. Some models like the AirPods Pro 1 and 2, and AirPods 3rd generation, do carry a water and sweat resistant rating so they may have a better chance to survive. If your AirPods accidentally get wet, you should wipe them down with a cloth and air dry them outside of the case before putting them back in.
Is the AirPods Max waterproof?
The AirPods Max is not waterproof, and also doesn't carry any sweat or water resistance rating like some of the AirPods and AirPods Pro. Due to this, the AirPods Max are not recommended for water sports or activities where the headphones may get wet. They should also not be worn in the rain, in order to prevent any damage.
