Hate the feeling of in-ear earbuds and having to stick silicone eartips into your ear canal?

The solution is an “open-fit” or “open-ear” earbud without eartips entirely, and Apple’s latest AirPods 5 is the best of this category (whether you’re an Apple or Android user).

Despite not having eartips like the AirPods “Pro” series, the AirPods 5 actually has quite impressive active noise cancelling performance, despite its physical limitations.

With no eartips and a very ergonomic form-fitting design, the AirPods 5 is arguably the most comfortable earbud we’ve ever tested, achieving that “forget you’re wearing them” feeling.

Along with decent noise cancelling performance, the AirPods 5 has pretty good sound quality with decent bass response and clear details.

If you’re an Apple user, the AirPods 5 is one of the most convenient and hassle-free choices due to the seamless pairing and switching across multiple iOS and Mac devices.

If you’re an Android user, the AirPods 5 still works great, but is a bit more limited in its features.

Now while the newer AirPods 5 is fantastic for an open-fit earbud, the flagship AirPods Pro 3 is the better overall earbud for Apple and iPhone users, with better performance and even more features.

The AirPods Pro 3 has superior active noise cancelling (the eartips help with physical seal), better sound quality, better microphone quality, longer battery life, and more features than the AirPods 5.

One of those features being the clinical-grade hearing aid that the AirPods Pro 3 doubles as.

Add in the same Apple ecosystem connectivity which makes switching across multiple iOS and Mac devices a breeze, and that makes the AirPods Pro 3 unbeatable for convenience.

Now if you’re an Apple user who is curious about venturing outside of the AirPods lineup entirely, the short answer is that for under $200, it’s very tough to beat the AirPods Pro 3.

For certain things like sound quality, there is better options but at the cost of convenience.

Also, the AirPods Pro 3 is at or near best-in-class for noise cancelling performance and mic quality.

Overall, the AirPods Pro 3 is the safest choice for Apple users, and is a surprisingly strong value on sale.

Best for Android Users: Nothing Ear 3

While AirPods are still king for Apple users, they’re more limited in their features when used with Android devices.

That’s not the case with the Nothing Ear (3), which is a very strong value for being $149 USD full retail, and frequently discounted down closer to $100.

Since the “Nothing” brand is an Android smartphone manufacturer, their products are designed to work flawlessly with Android phones, but they also work just as well on iPhones.

The Nothing Ear (3) has very fun sound quality with strong bass response and sub-bass. One of the most visceral bass response I’ve heard in an earbud.

The noise cancelling is also fairly decent, although not quite that “elite” flagship level of earbuds costing $250-$300 like the Sony WF-1000XM6.

One unique aspect of the Ear (3) is a “Super Mic” feature that has a high-quality microphone built into the earbuds’ charging case.

Overall, the Nothing Ear (3) is a strong value for Android users, especially on sale.

Best for Gym, Working Out, and Running: Beats Powerbeats Pro 2

When it comes to a gym earbud, a lot of these other earbuds sound nice on paper, but completely fail when it comes to staying in place while moving and maintaining that proper physical seal.

Enter the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 with its game-changing earhooks design.

Trust me, once you try out the earhooks for working out, you’ll never want to go back to “regular” earbuds that constantly fall out of place with you having to readjust all the time.

These are also IPX4-rated, which means they are resistant to sweat and light splashes of water.

Next, the Powerbeats Pro 2 has an innovative Heart Rate Sensor built in that can track your workouts and send that data to your phone. This is a very unique feature and built specifically for exercise.

Now aside from the secure fit, the Powerbeats Pro 2 is unique because it’s actually powered by the same Apple H2 chip (Apple owns the Beats brand after all) found in the AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2.

This translates to pretty decent active noise cancelling performance, and one of the best transparency modes in the class, allowing you to be fully aware of your surroundings.

Now what makes Beats slightly better than AirPods is that Beats offers both native Apple and Android app support.

If you’re an Apple or iPhone user, the Beats pretty much functions like AirPods.

If you’re an Android user, there is a native Beats app that gives you full access to all the features and functionality.

I test all of our headphones and earbuds in a commercial gym environment, and the Powerbeats Pro 2 is my personal choice to continue using daily.

Let me not bury the lede here, the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro literally has “Guinness World Records-Certified Call Quality”.

And luckily for us, the Liberty 5 Pro costs much less than other flagships at $169.99 USD retail, and even down to under $140 on sale.

Soundcore is able to achieve this feat with a seriously impressive hardware architecture consisting of an 8-microphone array, 2 bone conduction sensors (or “Voice Pickup Units”), and “Anker Thus AI” processing chip.

In addition to best-in-class call quality, the Liberty 5 Pro has a very comfortable and secure fit, strong noise cancelling performance, and enjoyable sound quality for the money.

Bose is simply one of the best when it comes to active noise cancelling in their “QuietComfort” series headphones, and their QuietComfort Earbuds are no exception.

Although Bose has a more expensive “Ultra Earbuds” series as their flagship, the mid-tier QuietComfort Earbuds are surprisingly competitive when it comes to active noise cancelling performance.

Now, the “elite” best-in-class for noise cancelling performance is typically reserved for the more expensive $200+ flagship models, but at under $200, the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds are tough to beat in this price range.

Aside from noise cancelling, the QuietComfort Earbuds are genuinely one of the most comfortable and form-fitting earbud designs as well, true to its name.

That form-fitting design is partly the reason for strong noise cancelling performance due to a consistent physical seal.

I would say 2 other solid options for noise cancelling would be the Apple AirPods Pro 3, followed by the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro.

Best Audiophile Sound Quality: SoundPEATS H3

At a full retail price of just $129.99 USD, and frequently discounted to under $110, the SoundPEATS H3 blew me away for its sound quality relative to its “budget” price point.

There’s nothing “budget” about the H3’s sound, and it rivals the sound quality of earbuds costing $200-$300.

Starting with the features affecting sound quality, the SoundPEATS H3 has one of the widest hi-res codec supports in LDAC, aptX Lossless, and aptX Adaptive.

Basically, this means you can stream higher source quality resulting in better sound quality than standard AAC.

Quick note, since iPhone doesn’t support any hi-res codecs like LDAC (available on most modern Android smartphones) or aptX Lossless/Adaptive, you will need a dongle like the Questyle QCC Dongle Pro2 to unlock these codecs:

In addition to hi-res codec support, the H3 has a rare “triple hybrid” driver architecture, which is usually reserved for audiophile wired IEMs.

So essentially, the H3 is like a wired IEM put into a wireless earbud form, which explains why its sound quality is superior to most wireless earbuds that solely rely on a single-driver architecture.

The end result of this triple hybrid driver setup combined with LDAC (or aptX Lossless) is audiophile-level resolution, details, clarity, and soundstage.

I personally love the energetic and hyped tuning of the H3, which pushes forward bass and treble in a tasteful manner that is never muddy or bloated.

Aside from sound quality, the H3 is a solid all-around earbud with strong noise cancelling performance and good features.

At under $130, and sometimes closer to $100 on sale, the SoundPEATS H3 is an incredible value.

We have an entire article dedicated to the Best Budget Earbuds Under $100, and the Soundcore Liberty 5 was our overall winner for the price bracket.

Please note that we’re referring to the cheaper non-“Pro” version, which retails for $129.99 USD, but can be found on sale under $90.

You may have seen us praise the higher-end Liberty 5 Pro model in this article, but the “regular” Liberty 5 is actually not that far off.

For starters, it actually shares the exact same driver hardware for nearly-identical sound quality, which is quite good.

Next, the noise cancelling performance is one of the best in this price range, and is not far off from the Liberty 5 Pro.

What the Liberty 5 Pro has over the Liberty 5 is its best-in-class microphone quality, but the Liberty 5 is still serviceable for calls otherwise.

If you can upgrade to the Liberty 5 Pro, by all means do so. But for almost half the market price, the Liberty 5 is a better pure dollar value.

The SoundPEATS H3 would be a solid runner-up here as well for value, but typically hovers around $110 market price. It has much better sound quality than the Liberty 5, but is less impressive as an overall package.

There is a strong case for the AirPods Pro 3 to be our Overall winner, but the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro is not only a better dollar value, it also has native support for both Apple and Android users.

At a retail price of $169.99 USD, but on sale for under $140, the Liberty 5 Pro is a legit flagship contender against all of the $200-$300 wireless earbuds from the likes of Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, etc.

For starters, the Liberty 5 Pro has best-in-class microphone and call quality, as we pointed out earlier in this article.

Next, the advanced hardware that goes into that mic quality also results in strong active noise cancelling performance.

The Liberty 5 Pro also has one of the most comfortable and ergonomic fits that stays in place due to these “fins” that keep them in place, reminding me of the more expensive Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2 Earbuds.

Overall, the Liberty 5 Pro is a legit flagship earbud for almost half the price of its direct competition, and for that reason, it’s our best earbud under $200 today.
