Best Comfort: Anker Soundcore Q20i
The Soundcore Q20i is easily the most comfortable headphone on this list due to its larger over-ear design and relaxed clamping force.
Other popular headphones like the JBL Tune 510BT, JBL Tune 520BT, and Sony WH-CH520 are smaller on-ear designs that really press your ears back and leave them sore afterwards.
Also, every other headphone we tested in this price range had quite strong clamping force from the factory, further applying pressure to the ears.

Best for Working Out: Sony WH-CH520
The Sony WH-CH520 is the lightest wireless headphone we’ve tested, so it makes for a great workout headphone.
Unlike the larger Soundcore Q20i and TOZO HT3, the Sony WH-CH520 is a smaller on-ear design that doesn’t fully cover the ears, leading to less heat buildup in the gym or when running.
The only caveat to the Sony is that it does not include active noise cancelling, so you will hear more sound come through like gym background music playing.
This lack of noise cancelling can be a positive, as you can stay more aware of your surroundings.
But if noise cancelling is important, look towards the Soundcore Q20i or TOZO HT3 instead.

Best Headphones for Bass: JBL Tune 520BT
This was a close one between the JBL Tune 520BT and the TOZO HT3, but ultimately, the JBL has the superior bass response.
JBL advertises their “JBL Pure Bass” sound, and it’s not a gimmick at all.
Despite being a smaller on-ear headphone with smaller drivers, the bass is surprisingly visceral with plenty of slam and quantity.
What actually impresses me the most about the Tune 520BT is that the bass is not only plentiful, but it’s rather clean and controlled, especially compared to the muddier and looser TOZO HT3’s bass.

Best for Travel: TOZO HT3
The TOZO HT3 is our winner for best budget headphone for travel due to having the best noise cancelling performance, combined with the best battery life, and good build quality.
At under $50, and sometimes even under $30 on sale, I was genuinely surprised by the TOZO HT3’s noise cancelling performance.
Add in an impressive 55 hours of battery life with noise cancelling ON, and up to a whopping 90 hours with ANC off.
My only gripe would be that the comfort isn’t as good as the Soundcore Q20i due to having a firmer clamping force, but the noise cancelling is better.
Best Noise Cancelling Performance: TOZO HT3
The TOZO HT3 has the best active noise cancelling performance I’ve tested under $50, and even competes with many ANC headphones under $100.
For reference, I typically review the $400+ flagship noise cancelling headphones from Sony, Bose, Apple, and Sennheiser.
While the TOZO HT3 is not quite at that flagship level, it is more than serviceable for everyday environments and even your next flight.
The Soundcore Q20i is the only other real contender under $50 for noise cancelling, but I found the TOZO HT3 to be superior to the Q20i heads-up.
Best Sound Quality: JBL Tune 520BT
Here at RecordingNOW, we tend to have an audiophile emphasis when it comes to sound quality, having reviewed wireless headphones upwards of $500, to $1,000, and even $2,000.
Honestly, I’m genuinely impressed with how good the JBL Tune 520BT sounds for the money, especially considering it’s an on-ear headphone with smaller drivers.
I thought the over-ears like the Soundcore Q20i and TOZO HT3 would beat the on-ears, but I was wrong.
The JBL Tune 520BT executes on the bass-heavy, consumer-friendly sound signature better than any other brand at this price range.
The bass response is especially clean and controlled versus its competition, and is super satisfying to listen to.

Best Overall Value: TOZO HT3
With its rare combination of noise cancelling performance, excellent battery life, good build quality, and decent sound quality, our overall pick is the dark-horse TOZO HT3.
While not as recognizable of a brand as JBL, Sony, and Soundcore, these headphones still sell over 3,000 units per month on Amazon currently.
The TOZO HT3 genuinely surprised me as an overall package for what you can get these days under $50, and even down to $30 on sale.
The only knock I have as an audiophile is that the tuning of the stock sound profile is overly bass-heavy, leading to a muddy sound with less detailed vocals.
But luckily, these have a pretty advanced smartphone app with custom EQ to clean it up.
“Best Overall” Runner Up: Anker Soundcore Q20i
Like the TOZO HT3, the Soundcore Q20i is a rare combination of noise cancelling and build quality for this price bracket, but add in better comfort on top of that.
Between the two, the Q20i feels like a cloud due to less clamping force and better cushioning.
The sound quality is also comparable to the TOZO HT3, but I do have the TOZO pulling slightly ahead of the Soundcore.
If comfort is one of your top priorities, I’d choose the Q20i over the TOZO HT3.

Conclusion
After having reviewed over 60+ pairs of wireless headphones and earbuds to date, I was pleasantly surprised by the hidden gems found for under $50.
By the numbers, the JBL Tune 510BT, 520BT, and Sony WH-CH520, are extremely popular best-sellers, but I ended up walking away more impressed by the larger over-ear headphones with active noise cancelling like the Soundcore Q20i and TOZO HT3.
The sound quality of the JBL Tune 520BT and Sony WH-CH520 did impress me more than the Soundcore and TOZO, but their smaller on-ear design just wasn’t as comfortable.
Having any active noise cancelling, even if it’s below-average, is a world’s difference from having no noise cancelling at all like the JBL Tune 520BT or Sony WH-CH520.
Lastly, the build quality of the larger Soundcore Q20i and TOZO HT3 was on a different level to the cheap-feeling and plasticky JBL and Sony headphones.
