For all my broke college students out there, I’ve got you covered.

The good news is that you don’t need to spend a ton to get solid value in headphones these days.

Having put dozens of hours into testing the best wireless headphones under $50, my recommendation would be the Anker Soundcore Q20i which can be found for around $45 USD.

For less than $50, you’ll be receiving one of the most comfortable headphones in the price range due to its larger over-ear design.

The over-ear design combined with a fairly relaxed clamping force means that these are one of the most comfortable for people who wear glasses as well.

Lots of budget headphones under $50 are the smaller “on-ear” design that presses firmly against your ears instead of covering them, which is a non-starter for those long study sessions.

In addition to comfort, the Q20i has some of the best noise cancelling performance for the money, which will aid in focus and cutting down on outside noise and chatter.

Lastly, the build quality is above-average for the price, so you can count on these to hold up better than some of these other budget pairs that feel extremely cheap in comparison.

The Sony WH-CH720N is the lightest wireless over-ear noise cancelling headphone we’ve tested at just 186.4 grams.

These also have one of the most relaxed clamping forces out of the headphones we tested, which is perfect for long study sessions and especially for those who wear glasses.

Next, Sony is known to have some of the best noise cancelling technology in the industry.

While the noise cancelling performance on the WH-CH720N is not as good as their more expensive $400 flagships like the WH-1000XM6, it’s more than good enough for students.

Although not as high of a priority as comfort and noise cancelling, I love the sound signature of the WH-CH720N which is very fun to listen to for music.

I’ve tested all of the best noise cancelling headphones under $100, and the Sony WH-CH720N is easily one of my personal favorites.

If you prefer the smaller form factor of wireless earbuds as opposed to over-ear headphones, then the Apple AirPods Pro 3 would be my choice for a few reasons.

The first reason would be if you are an iPhone user, as the sheer convenience and connectivity of using AirPods with iOS is unbeatable for daily practicality.

If you’re gonna be constantly moving about and taking the earbuds on/off regularly, then the last thing you want is a pair that takes long to connect or doesn’t connect half the time. You’ll never have that issue pairing AirPods with an iOS device or Macbook.

If you are NOT an iPhone user, then I would suggest the Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 Pro instead, which is the closest parallel to the AirPods Pro 3, but for Android users.

Second, the noise cancelling performance and transparency mode is one of the best in the entire earbuds class, thanks to Apple’s H2 chip.

The noise cancelling is crucial for focus, while the transparency mode will keep you fully aware when walking to and from class or commuting.

Lastly, although the AirPods Pro 3 is not cheap, it’s actually a solid value when on sale under $200 compared to flagship earbuds like Sony WF-1000XM6 that can cost over $300.

The Bose QuietComfort 2nd Gen is one of the lightest premium over-ear headphones we’ve tested to date, weighing in at just 237.3 grams.

For reference, the AirPods Max 2 weighs in 147 grams heavier at 384.4 grams.

Even the lightweight Sony WH-1000XM6 weighs more at 252.8 grams.

Finally, the flagship Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen model weighs in about 25 grams heavier at 262.2 grams.

Not only is the Bose QuietComfort 2 incredibly light, but it has a relaxed clamping force with plenty of interior earcup space, so my ears are free inside, unlike the cramped Sony XM6.

This relaxed clamping force is also the most important factor for people who wear glasses, as strong clamping forces like the Sony WH-1000XM6 will apply more pressure to the frames.

Next, the noise cancelling performance of the Bose QuietComfort 2 is easily in the Top 5 for the class, and I like how it is quite unnoticeable.

Aside from the Sony WH-CH720N mentioned earlier, the Bose QuietComfort 2 is the most comfortable headphone we’ve tested, with much better noise cancelling than the budget Sony’s as well.

Although the “regular” Bose QuietComfort 2nd Gen is our winner for comfort, mainly due to being lighter than the flagship QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen, the Ultra ultimately wins as a whole.

So what do you get by upgrading to the QC Ultra 2nd Gen?

First, although the noise cancelling is excellent on the regular QuietComfort 2, it’s stronger overall on the Ultra 2nd Gen. This translates to deeper focus and less disturbances.

The QC Ultra 2 has 30 hours of battery life compared to the 24 hours on the QuietComfort 2. This extra battery life translates to less charging and more sessions without the battery going dead.

You also get more premium materials and build quality, as the QC Ultra 2 has stainless steel headband core and aluminum hinges compared to mostly plastic on the QuietComfort 2.

This durability becomes a factor in the long-term longevity of the headphones.

Lastly, the QC Ultra 2nd Gen has the superior audiophile sound quality and aptX Lossless support, which the QuietComfort 2 does not support.

Essentially, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen was the most comfortable headphone we had tested until the QuietComfort 2, but factor in all of the differences outlined above, and the QC Ultra 2 is still the better overall headphone.
